diversity + inclusion

Diversity incorporates all of the elements that make individuals unique from one another, and while there are infinite differences in humans, most of us subconsciously define diversity by a few social categories, such as gender, race, age and so forth.

Inclusion is defined as “the achievement of a work environment in which all individuals are treated fairly and respectfully, have equal access to opportunities and resources, and can contribute fully to the organization’s success.”

Before I ever sketched a wireframe or did a user interview, I was a black woman first.

So, before I entered the field of user experience design, I was already “down by two” or in a “double-bind.” I overcame lack of access to resources, questioned skills, and a mix of blatant racial and gender discrimination.

Now, as I explore UX/UI, I can't imagine designing a product and not taking into consideration a diverse group of users. Why? Because I have never had that privilege. Being aware and having a passion for pulling from various backgrounds and social status’ is one of my strong points in helping startups.
